Just had to say something about ps2.ign.com and all the rest of the sites.
ign.com publishes tons of good content about games, and that’s cool. But they’ve started publishing much of it under the “insider” section — which means you have to pay for it.
I can’t emphasize how unwilling I am to pay for content from people who don’t spend any time proofreading their shit. So much of the site is just ridiculously nonsensical. I want to mark up their reviews and send them back. With all the money they must be making (and they must be getting subscribers, right?) they could afford to hire me to edit their crap.
So, on one hand, it bums me out that I can’t read much of the content. On the other hand, I never really enjoyed reading it in the first place. The thing that really really pisses me off though, is that they are getting paid for putting out totally crappy content.
For example:
After the worldwide success of Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the PC, Activision has decided what all good publishers should do: Bring the PC game to the consoles. Activision officially told IGNPS2 today that its World War II-based first person shooter is coming home to the consoles.
What a crappy paragraph. Perhaps it was spell-checked, but obviously nobody bothered to read it over for the missing word in the first sentence, the incorrect use of the colon and/or the capitalization of the next word…
Bleh on them.
